Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen: The Reiki Symbol For Distance Healing

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is the Reiki symbol for distance healing and the third symbol you learn in the Usui Reiki system.

You may use it to heal your past, support your present and any future goals you might have.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen’s vibration uniquely complements Reiki and expands your practice by enabling you to transcend time and space.

Its energy will boost your connection to other Reiki symbols and enhance the universal life force energy flow.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen can help you manifest your full potential into the present by dissolving energetic blockages from the past. This will go beyond daily issues and facilitate a brighter future.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Meaning And Pronunciation

The symbols roughly translate as:

“There is no past, no present, no future.”

“The past, present, and future are one.”

“The Divinity in me salutes the Divinity in you.”

I choose to use “Divinity” because Reiki is independent of any religion, and anyone can use it regardless of their faith.

You pronounce it: Hon-Sha-Zee-Show-Nen [hɑn ʃɑ zi ʃoʊ nen]

How To Draw Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen

The drawing uses Japanese Kanji letters. It’s quite fascinating because it actually tells a story and speaks volumes about the symbol’s meaning and purpose.

This symbol is slightly more complicated than others, but the good news is that you don’t have to memorize it in order to work. Instead, remember that intention is what matters in Reiki, so it’s enough to visualize and focus on its shape while you activate it.

Still, here’s the story in broad strokes:

The first part represents the past, the obstacles we inevitably encounter on our path to happiness.

Next, it tells us that we can overcome whatever happens.

The symbol would not be complete without mentioning the present, a unique space where you can create change.

The future is what you’d like to happen in your life by tapping into the universal life force energy.

The final strokes stand for connection and togetherness.

Keep in mind that this interpretation is the result of my own research and is by no means definitive.

What Is Reiki Distance Healing

To better understand the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Reiki symbol and its uses, it’s good to have a clear understanding of the overall concept.

Distance healing is the ability to transfer energy and/or information in the past, present, and future. It also means that the practitioner can channel energy towards others (with their consent), regardless of their location.

You may use distance healing to support future events, goals, past traumas, and most situations that require cleansing.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is the element that helps you transcend time and space and, therefore, facilitates distance healing.

Moreover, you’ll be able to explore the essence of the universal life force energy through the constant use of this symbol. This new perception can help improve both your practice and daily life.

You can read more about how our past influences the way we see our future in this article on psychologytoday.com.

How To Use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen On Yourself

You may use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen in your Reiki practice, along with other Reiki symbols, but also in meditations to help improve your connection with the universal life force energy.

As a “stand-alone” symbol, it can help you connect to a person or place that you either miss or would like to see in the future.

Here are some general steps you can follow:

  • Find a quiet place and set some time aside for yourself;
  • Sit or lie down, close your eyes, and then take a few deep breaths to relax;
  • Ask your Reiki guides to assist you in this meditation;
  • Visualize Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen in front of the place you wish to visit or remember;
  • Slowly immerse yourself in this journey and enjoy each moment;
  • When you’re ready to return, visualize as you re-enter your body and then slowly open your eyes;

Use these steps as a reference point and adapt them to your needs.

Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen In A Sequence

To benefit from its full potential, use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen in conjunction with the “Power Symbol” – Cho Ku Rei and the “Mental-Emotional Healing Symbol” – Sei He Ki. This sequence will facilitate the opening of a gateway towards the universal life force energy.

It will work even if you use the sequence backward.

NOTE: In Reiki, the intention is key. Use it wisely, and don’t get stuck in details. It will enable you to channel Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen’s energy in time and space by creating a spiritual bridge to specific situations, people, and future events.

How To Use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen In Self-Treatment

Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen as a stand-alone element will help you connect to a person or place. It can “open doors” as a neutral Reiki symbol but doesn’t stimulate specific actions.

To channel the universal energy, you have to use it in conjunction with other symbols while having a clear intention.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Activate the sequence: Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen on your palms and your primary chakras.
  • Place your palms in the Reiki hand positions. This will allow the light to enter your energy centers, cleansing them in the process;

Using this sequence on the crown chakra will help open the main energy channel to the universal energy and create a spiritual path towards your higher, divine self.

Placing your activated palms on the sacral area to stimulate your Kundalini energy. This will help you gradually acknowledge your spiritual potential and imbalances that require healing.

Working with your Kundalini energy is a way to experience the connection between your inner-self and higher-self, which can reveal a whole new level of spiritual awareness.

There are other uses, like no.7 below. They are all put together in our “Ultimate Reiki Symbols Guide” to make it easier for the practitioner to access and implement when needed.

How To Use Distance Healing For Yourself

  • Activate your palms using the Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen sequence. This will allow the universal energy to travel more efficiently;
  • Activate the sequence in front of you to open the gateway;
  • Visualize yourself, your goal, or an event and allow the energy to flow through your palms for about 10-15 minutes;

When done, I would recommend sealing the session with a Cho Ku Rei;

How To Properly Use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen To Heal Your Past

Many people wonder why sending Reiki to our past is a good idea.

Without exception, we’ve all experienced unpleasant moments at least a few times in our life. Obviously, some are more severe than others.

Still, these past events usually have implications in the present.

You might not be aware of them, and that’s ok. Through constant Reiki practice, you can reveal these blockages, get to the root of the problem, and slowly start healing them.

Ignoring their presence can be detrimental to your future.

Unless you have reached a state of peace and are genuinely connected to the divine consciousness, past experiences can strongly impact your development and behavior.

So … what actually happens?

All traumatic event leave an energetic print within our energy fields.

These prints can develop and manifest through our emotions and actions in the physical plane. Eventually, they will lead to frustrations, fears, and negative thoughts.

That’s why it’s important to consider cleansing ourselves and becoming free of these residual energies.

Sending Reiki distance healing to such an unpleasant past event has the power to heal a “wound” from its root. As previously said, this happens when you start to become aware of the real cause.

Additionally, the Reiki self-treatment will also build a layer of protection, making you more resilient to future, negative influences.

But there’s another type of protection you should consider.

When sending energy to your past to heal an unfortunate event, you might absorb part of that negative experience. To reduce the chance of being affected, it’s ideal to consider energetic protection.

The easiest way to build such a shield is to activate the Reiki symbols on all your main chakras, as well as on the front and back of your body.

Two Methods Of Sending Reiki Distance Healing To Your Past

One – Look back at the event as a simple spectator without getting involved. Activate your palms with the Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbols and then open the dimension to that event by activating the same sequence in front of you. Visualize the event while having the specific intention of healing and dissolving any negative energies generated in those moments. Send light for a few minutes to allow everything to heal in an optimum way for everyone involved;

Two – Write down a brief description of the unpleasant event on a piece of paper. Activate your hands using the same sequence and fold the paper so that it fits within your palms. Apply the same symbols on the paper and hold it for 10 minutes. Think about directing the energy towards healing any problem that has roots in this event. Dissolve all the generated negative energy for the greater good of the people involved.

NOTE: This shouldn’t become a daily practice! You don’t want to change or disturb your past but merely cleanse it. Sending a high amount of light to a past event all at once can dislocate that negative energy and bring part of it into the present. Remember that you want to heal the moment, not bring it back. Therefore, a 10-15 minutes session per week is enough for this type of intervention. Using the present to balance your past will also improve future outcomes.

What Is A Reiki Project And How To Create One Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen

When you want to support future goals, start living every day as if you’re already there.

“I’m a World Champion.”

“I’m married to the right partner for me.”

“I’m thankful for experiencing [desired goal] now, in the present.”

This type of affirmations will slowly set the right mindset giving you “permission,” to some extent, to have whatever you wish for.

Again, this is not magic! – even though you can read about “Magick” in Reiki here >>

Everything has to and will be aligned with your spiritual journey. Therefore, you’ll only receive what you can hold and whatever will help your overall development.

The good news is that you can use the universal life force energy, Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, and a Reiki project to support you in this process.

How To Create A Reiki Project

Take a regular, blank piece of paper.

Write down your dream or goal at the present time and with positive affirmations such as:

“I have the best job for me, for my life for my greater good.”

“I am having the best, optimum relationship for me, for my life, for the greater good of us both.”

Then draw all the Reiki Symbols that you are attuned to on the back of the paper and activate them using your fingers while pronouncing their names 3 times.

Fold the paper to fit into your palms.

Next, activate Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen on your palms and the folded piece of paper. Then hold it for 10-15 minutes each day.

Send light, love, and be thankful for achieving all the plans written on that piece of paper. Have the intention for them to happen for the greater good of all the people involved in your actions.

As the old Reiki tradition goes, you may burn the paper and thank your spirit guides for all the help once everything has been fulfilled.

Distance Healing Should Be For Your Greater Good

When practicing Reiki distance healing, it’s essential to mention that everything should happen “for my greater good.”

Remember that we’re unable to see too far into the future, and you’ll never know what’s the best outcome for you. So even if you wish for something specific, that might not be the best choice.

That’s why you should be thankful for the guidance you receive, remain flexible, and allow the energy to balance your future self.

The result may surprise you.

But you can only connect the dots looking backward. And, my experience has taught me that they always make sense and that everything that took place until that point was only beneficial for my greater good.

Having a clear intention is essential for these processes to work. Can’t stress it enough, I know. Yet, having the right pieces in the correct spots before you begin can go a long way and produce significant positive changes.

How To Send Distance Healing To A Person Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen

There are many reasons for using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen to support the distance healing technique. A common situation is when a patient is uncomfortable receiving hands-on Reiki treatment. That’s a great time to make use of this symbol.

You may also use it when a quick “intervention” is required. That connection can be more than enough to get someone through a rough moment or help them find balance.

Sending Distance Healing To Others:

Activate the Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen on your palms and in front of you to open a gateway towards that person.

Yet, there are a few particularities that can improve the overall process.

  • First – make sure you have the person’s consent. Be clear about what you’re about to do and tell them what to expect. Never send light/energy without the other person knowing your intentions;
  • Second – Hold something that belongs to that person in your hands. This can be a picture or any other object that’s small enough to allow you to move freely;
  • Third – Activate your palms and open the gateway as previously discussed. Visualize the person in front of you and while you connect to them, send distance healing for about 10-15 minutes. Add the phrase “I’m sending pure light for her/his greater good” or something similar to allow the energy to manifest in an optimum way for them;
  • Optional – Put your hands on your body with the intention of laying them over the respective person. This is known as the “self-surrogate” distance healing method. Move them to the areas that need healing, as you would in real life. You can stay in each position for ~3-5 minutes;

How To Use Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen To Send Reiki Distance Healing For Someone Who Passed

This comes naturally to people who lost someone dear, but you may also choose to do the same for those who did you wrong.

Forgiving yourself and others is a powerful spiritual act with long-term, positive implications.

So…

Using the same sequence of Reiki symbols Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen while having the clear intention of sending energy towards the greater good of the people who passed away, you help them wherever their spirit might be.

This will support their development from a spiritual perspective even if they are now in another plane of existence.

Spending 10-15 minutes once in a while on this exercise is enough. It may seem insignificant, but it adds a lot of value on the “other side.”

NOTE: This is not a way to communicate with those who passed. It’s just a choice you make to help them wherever they are by channeling light and spiritual support.

Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Reiki Symbol To Connect To A Book Or Work Of Art

This technique can be really useful when you want to go deeper into a subject and have the means to do so.

Sometimes it’s necessary to go beyond the written words and connect to their true meaning.

To avoid misinterpretations, you can send light to the author and the work itself. Have the intention of obtaining all the information that is useful to you. Then, use the same sequence of symbols to connect to the hidden message.

Relax and see what you’ll receive.

Using Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen To Connect To The Akashic Records

The Akashic records represent a universal library located in a non-physical plane.

They contain all the information from our past, present, and future. These records go back as far as the creation of Earth, and every thought, word, event, and soul experience resides in this library.

With the help of Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen and through meditation, you can analyze these elements by connecting to the library itself.

NOTE: I don’t recommend this technique to beginners. The amount of energy and information can be astonishing because it holds all human history. Therefore, it carries all the “good” and “bad” elements.
However, under the guidance of an experienced teacher, such a meditation can be quite profound.

Here are the steps:

  • I encourage anyone looking to get involved in such an exercise to build a layer of protection before accessing this vast spiritual library. There are many ways to do this, but at the very least, activate the Reiki symbols on your main energy centers;
  • Take deep breaths to enter the Alpha state. This is when the conscious mind calms down, and you’ll be able to receive messages from the spiritual realms;
  • Visualize Cho Ku Rei + Sei He Ki + Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen symbol sequence to connect to the Akashic records;

What matters now is what you can do in the present. This will be stated in the Akashic records, and you’ll know what the next steps should look like.

To benefit from a brighter future, you have to build a solid foundation in the present as with anything else. Still, to do this properly, it’s essential to also have a good understanding of your past.

Conclusion

You can use the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen Reiki symbol and Reiki distance healing techniques in many ways. Still, it’s ultimately up to you to discover them through meditation and intuition.

The beauty of Reiki lies within its flexibility and versatility.

That’s why the possibilities are so immense. You can use it to connect with spirit guides or with the Akashic records, you can send distant healing to people in need, and so much more.

Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is also an ideal vehicle for finding answers about yourself. It can help boost your awareness, stimulate your intuition, and amplify the healing energy you channel.

Feel free to experiment, stay flexible and allow yourself to be surprised by the unlimited potential that lies in front of you.

    • If you are not attuned in any Reiki system, then you are not able to send distance healing or use Reiki for that matter. If you re referring to the reiki Master attunement (level), then you don’t need to be a Reiki Master/Teacher. You can use distance healing at level 2 Reiki.

      Let me know if this answered your question.

    • Hi there Poonam and thank you for writing.

      It depends on which hand you are going to use for channeling the universal life force energy. If you will use only one hand, then you will activate the symbols on that one. If you are going to use both hands, then activate both.

  1. We were taught to hold our hands in a cupped position, and draw the bridge mentally with our third eye, to do distance healing. Is that ok?

    • Hi there Mohana and thank you for writing.

      This can work as well. Every Reiki school can have different ways of teaching the distance healing/energy sending technique. What matters in the end is the clear intention.

      So, do it as you feel it is best for you.

      Believe it or not, the first level is what kept Hyakuten Inamoto going for more than 10 years… He is one of the oldest Reiki masters alive and he did so many wonderful things just by having the 1st level of Reiki.

      So feel blessed for having the first level of Reiki. It can do wonders.

  4. Hi. Excellent article. Thank you. Does the ‘recipient’ of the distance healing need to be aware it is being sent to them? Do they have to prepare in any way? I have been trying to improve my ability to send distance healing to someone who so badly needs healing but I don’t feel any connection as I would usually experience during a hands on session. I have received distance healing from my Reiki Master and it was so intense but I always knew exactly when it was starting and prepared myself by meditation and bring in comfortable, quiet surroundings.

    • Hi there Barbara and thank you for writing.

      The “recipient” should know at least that there will be distance healing sent to them at one point. She/he doesn’t necessarily need to know when exactly this occurs. Having said that, knowing the exact time, would offer the receiver the time to place themselves in a more relaxing mindset

      When you send energy to another person, be sure to add “for their greater good”. There is a possibility that the receiver doesn’t need this energy even if they asked for it. It also depends on the sensitivity levels of each person. In the case of you and your Reiki master, there may be quite a good, healthy resonance between the two of you, that’s why you feel it so intense.

      You can read more about the sensitivity levels in this article:

  5. Hello Vlad!

    I am very drawn to the Reiki Symbols without knowing their true meanings and are now starting to sell wooden grids with the symbols engraved on them. Is it okay for me to direct my customers to your site so they can learn more about the reiki symbols?

    • Hi Rajiv,

      First of all, get all the needed medical assistance as soon as possible.

      Reikiwise, you can use the described symbols and work on dissolving the negative energy of that tumor every day. It will probably take some time. It is best if there are multiple Reiki practitioners working with the same person simultaneously. Of course, accompany this with all the recommended medical treatment that is necessary to fight this.

  6. I have been attuned to level 2 and I’d like to be attuned to master but my master no longer is doing attunements. If I search for another master level to attune me, will I have to go through all levels with the new master? And do you still do attunements? It’s important for me to stay with the Usui lineage of Reiki. And could I get re-attuned for level 2 if I wanted by someone else to cleanse and remove my connection from the one who attuned me (it was my masters student who my master just attuned to master level at the time who attuned me to level 2).
    Thank you for your time and energy.

    I like your website. A lot of new information for me to discover.

    Regarding the distance symbol, how do I work on someone who did me wrong?

    Or is it me, that I’m actually working on?

    Dose the person who did me wrong need to know Im sending them light and love for their greated good?

    Or should I work for both our greater goods when trying to cleanse the negative?

    Thank you🙏

    • Hi there Georgiana.

      If someone did you wrong, then the first person to practice on is yourself in order to find a balance between forgiveness and detachment.

      Even so, if you wish to send energy into the exterior elements, then you should send energy to the relationship you have with that person for both your greater good. As long you are sending energy within this idea, then they don’t really need to know that you are sending energy because it’s not directed at them in a personal or intimate way. If it’s not a person with whom you have formed a type of relationship – meaning – boyfriend, husband, friend, or relative, then unless you wish to create a bond with that person, it’s best to move forward and see to your life

      Blessings!

    • Hi Marcel.

      There are many versions of the HSZSN symbol out there. It’s quite difficult to tell which is “good”, or “wrong”. And that’s honestly not important…
      What is important is to know what it represents, what it does, and the symbolic meaning of its name. The more we integrate that knowledge, the easier it will be to activate it just with our intention and use it for our greater good.

  9. Hi Vlad! I have been a Usui Reiki practioner for around 20 years. For the last year and a half I have had a serious illness that leaves me mostly house bound. For some reason I never thought about using the distance symbol for myself! So I was happy to read your article! I have been doing some distance healing for others. Recently, while doing a distance healing, I connected to an energy like nothing else I have experienced! It was pure love, so powerful it took my breath away, literally! I have experienced various energies while giving Reiki before, but nothing like this! Pure, powerful love for the person I was healing. I felt that it was her father’s energy. He had passed last year, but I somehow knew it was from him! Have you ever experienced anything like that?

    • Hi there Bob. First of all allow me to express my gratitude to you for reading this article.
      Second, yes, I have experienced this kind of pure, compassionate, and loving energy both in distance healing and in one-on-one Reiki therapy. Usually, when the other person’s spirit (alive or passed) authentically desires to receive light the connection sparks instantly.
