Sacral chakra is the second primary energetic center.
It supports our social skills and helps us express ourselves in the physical world through creativity and sensuality.
Although its actual presence is in the etheric realm, the sacral chakra is considered the second energetic center located within the physical body spectrum.
Together with its symmetrical back projection, it forms a complex system with multiple functions and characteristics, beneficial to our spiritual growth.
This article will explore the sacral chakra’s functions from a physical, emotional, and energetic perspective.
What Is The Meaning Of The Sacral Chakra And How It Influences Our Well-Being
The sacral chakra is also known as Svadhishthana in Hindu philosophy. It has Sanskrit origins and translates as “its own base” or “the one seat.”
It’s considered an important energy center in many cultures because it’s where most of a person’s energy gathers.
For example, the Buddhists term this area the “lower dantian,” which is part of a three energetic centers system that controls most of the essential body functions.
In Japanese esoteric philosophy, the sacral chakra location is called “lower tanden.” This is where most of the body’s vital energy is stored.
In Japanese martial arts is known as “hara.” This energetic center is considered the main source of power for martial arts practitioners.
Why It Matters
Perhaps its most crucial feature is that it symbolizes our spiritual growth’s first and most essential threshold. This concept is linked to our inner Kundalini energy.
If the root chakra is the “ground floor” for the Kundalini energy, I like to consider the sacral chakra the “first floor with a window”.
What I mean is that most people have their Kundalini energy gathered at this level, and it can manifest itself from this point on.
This is neither good nor bad.
It simply represents a basic stage in human spiritual evolution. We are all where we need to be at a particular moment in time.
Depending on our spiritual education and knowledge, the sacral chakra area is usually the hardest of all thresholds that the Kundalini energy needs to rise over.
That’s because this area is in strong connection with the core of the Kundalini energy, which usually means sexual energy, the catalyst behind creativity.
The sacral chakra, in addition, serves as a portal to the subconscious. This is where true healing must occur to benefit from physical, emotional, and spiritual development.
To awaken the Kundalini optimally above this level requires a great deal of work with oneself. It also implies a superior consciousness level.
Where Is The Sacral Chakra Located
The sacral chakra is located approximately one inch under the navel.
As mentioned in the beginning, the sacral chakra also has a back projection. This corresponds to the lumbar or sacral region, as the name suggests.
What Does The Sacral Chakra Do
At The Physical Level
The sacral chakra regulates the circulation and production of fluids and hormones in our bodies. This may include the seminal fluid, blood, or urine.
It’s also responsible for the health of our:
- Kidneys (partially);
- Lower intestine;
- Lymph and digestive liquids;
- Reproductive system (Contrary to some beliefs, the sacral chakra DOES have an essential role in keeping the reproductive system healthy);
Together with the root chakra, it can influence our material life. The more balanced it is, the more we are inclined to receive and offer material rewards naturally.
At The Emotional and Energetic Levels
Probably its most dominant attribute is the ability to coordinate and support sexual freedom. Considering that its energy is the catalyst for creativity, this “feature” goes beyond physical desire. It’s how we can freely express ourselves through emotions of any kind.
Sexual intercourse is just a piece of the puzzle. If we learn how to cultivate this energy, it can greatly influence our spiritual evolution.
Still, when it comes to pure sexual expression, a balanced sacral chakra will support the individual in offering and receiving physical pleasure. As a result, the need to be more sensual can also increase.
On the other hand, an activated sacral chakra will stimulate creative potential. This will help you participate in an activity you resonate with, like music, painting, writing, sports, and even science.
It will also assist you in manifesting joy. Keeping this energy center healthy will enable you to experience a “lust for life.” You’ll feel more alive and offer yourself inner happiness.
In other words, you’ll love and appreciate yourself in a harmonious way.
The sacral chakra generates the energy field called “the field of signaling emotions.”
What Color Does The Sacral Chakra Have
While ancient Indian texts provide multiple versions, the generally accepted color of the sacral chakra is bright sunset orange, which symbolizes purity in action.
It’s one of the reasons why Buddhist and Hindu monks use this color for their robes.
One has to care for this chakra to benefit from a clear shade of sunny orange.
What Is The Sacral Chakra Symbol
The sacral chakra is depicted by a six petals lotus. Each one represents the six negative telluric emotions that need to be transcended to benefit from a healthy emotional state.
There are two concentric circles that form a crescent moon.
These circles symbolize the perpetual flow of the life force energy within the body, while the silver crescent moon represents the Yin power within each one of us.
The sacral chakra’s element is water.
Sacral Chakra Healing
To ensure an efficient healing process, the first step is to understand why a chakra gets blocked, and what it needs to function properly.
How Does The Sacral Chakra Get Blocked
Denying our true inner nature is one of the main reasons why we end up with a blocked sacral chakra.
You might wonder what this means…
Each one of us has an inner-self with elements that resonate with us.
However, for the sake of others or to fit into society, we may dim, if not eliminate, the focus on those components. As a result, irritations, rage, and worry develop. All these lead to misery and eventually blockages.
NOTE: The inner-self represents our true self, stripped away of social responsibilities, patterns, and exterior influences. Somewhere deep inside is the real you. Once you become aware of this concept, it will be very difficult to cancel it out.
Another element that may block your sacral chakra is how you deal with a breakup. This may seem unrelated, but trust me, it is.
Whenever we begin a relationship, we send and receive energetic strings that attach to our chakras. One of the first strings is at the sacral level and the hardest to remove.
This string becomes stronger when we get intimate because we create an active transfer of emotions and energies.
Therefore, it can become very difficult to heal the sacral chakra when we end such a relationship because of this strong, energetic string. As a result, our ego and feelings are hurt, and this only deepens the wound.
The answer is to learn how to keep your balance in a relationship. The excess attachment might deplete your energy and divert your focus away from yourself.
Having said that, keep in mind that the desire to control or manipulate others will bring negative influences to your first two chakras.
And finally, stress, emotional disappointments, sadness, and conflicts can also disrupt the healthy flow of energy and affect you at this level.
Why Would You Consider Unblocking The Sacral Chakra
There are many benefits to take into consideration:
- Your social interaction will be more harmonious;
- You will be able to offer and receive affection from loved ones in a natural way;
- Self-trust and self-compassion will grow considerably;
- Accepting your true nature and sexuality will help you learn more about yourself;
- You will become more adaptable, flexible, and receptive within certain situations in life;
- The kidneys, bladder, and digestion system will become healthier;
- Your creative side will gradually emerge, allowing you to find new ways of expressing yourself in the material world;
Of course, these are just a few examples. Feel free to explore and find new gains that may be unique to you.
How To Unblock And Heal Your Sacral Chakra
1 – Meditation
Considering that the main element of the sacral chakra is water, any guided or self-guided meditation that includes this element will help stimulate its activation. For example, if you can sit next to a river and visualize as you absorb its energy into the sacral chakra, it will help tremendously.
Use introspection and acknowledge the essential nature of your emotions while doing this technique. You’ll know it’s activated when you learn how to express your feelings in a balanced manner.
2 – Reiki
This is really simple. Just activate your palms and place them on your lower abdomen area for ~10 minutes each day. You can lay one hand on the front, under the navel, and one on the back, in the sacral area. If you have time, try both Reiki hand positions and see how you feel.
3 – Hobby
Another option is to pour your creative potential into an activity that you resonate with. Of course, this will vary for every person, but it’s an efficient way to unblock your sacral chakra.
4 – Socialize
This is one of my favorite options. Hanging out with friends, family, and dear ones can help stimulate the opening of this chakra. Moreover, this activity will benefit the entire energetic system.
5 – Relationships
Having or developing a healthy relationship with your partner can do wonders. Again, this is not only to unblock your sacral chakra but the entire emotional and energetic system.
6 – Elements
You can also stimulate the activation of this chakra by using the following elements:
- Aromatherapy: with essential oils from oak, elm, ylang-ylang, or verbena;
- Music therapy: Svadhishthana resonates with the Moola Mantra. Still, a song with positive vibrations, even commercial music, can help;
- Chromotherapy: visualize a clear, bright orange light filling your sacral chakra each day. Be aware of how these waves move through your body, flooding it with energy;
Unblocking the sacral chakra is just the first phase. You do this by following one or more of the methods above daily until things start to improve.
But to keep a healthy chakra, you need to make this routine part of your life. That’s when the healing happens, and it’s why we study concepts like Reiki in the first place.
Such exercises will also help prevent blockages, making you less vulnerable to future breaches.
What Are The Best Crystals For The Sacral Chakra
There are quite a few stones that help cleanse and stimulate the activation of the sacral chakra:
- Orange Moonstone;
- Tangerine Quartz;
- Tiger’s eye;
- Orange calcite;
Where To Place The Sacral Chakra Crystals On Your Body
Whenever you are meditating or practicing Reiki, place one of these stones in the sacral chakra area. You can do so by holding it in your hands. Then, relax and allow their energies to communicate.
If you are lying down, simply place one of these stones under your navel and rest for a few minutes.
Even keeping these crystals next to you can benefit the entire energetic system.
Why Consider Carnelian
Carnelian is a quartz and it’s at the top of the list for good reason. This is one of the most effective crystals for the sacral chakra in terms of efficiency. It may help stimulate energy flow because it resonates with it the most, making it easier to do so.
And, the larger this stone is, the stronger its influence will be.
Carnelian spheres, for example, help keep a constant flow of energy at the sacral chakra level. An obelisk is used to concentrate that energy to a specific point.
Do You Need To Cleanse The Crystals Before Using Them On Your Sacral Chakra
Crystals and stones should be handled with care at all times. When they are cleansed and activated, they have the potential to channel the universal life force energy better.
Remember that they are living organisms, and each has its own vibration.
Here are three ways to keep your crystals cleansed and activated:
1 – Freshwater
Wash your crystals with clean lukewarm water. This will cleanse their energetic field and improve the energy flow.
2 – Incense
Smudge the crystals with an incense stick, palo santo, or frankincense. These offer a deeper cleansing of their energetic structure.
3 – Reiki
This is probably the best choice of all. Keep a crystal between your activated palms for 5-10 minutes. You may also add the Reiki symbols to the process. This action will enhance the energy flow and cleanse any residual elements.
How Do You Treat An Overactive Sacral Chakra
Some have an activated sacral chakra by nature and even reach a point of overflowing energy.
While this is not necessarily a bad thing, without guidance, it can cause a series of imbalances.
Why This Phenomenon Occurs
There are 4 reasons why the sacral chakra may become overactive.
1 – Sex
An overly intense sexual life can, at one point, lead to a constant desire for having intimate connections.
When the body is not properly stimulated, it may develop various imbalances over time, including being unable to find a suitable partner due to high expectations.
It can also lead to frequent arousal, which can subsequently result in shallow relationships. However, with assistance and understanding, the surplus of sexual energy might be put to beneficial use.
2 – Empathy
Being exceedingly empathic or sensitive can create an overflow of energy within the sacral chakra.
You become stressed at one point if you begin to care too much about others and forget about yourself. This may result in an overactive dynamic within your energetic body, particularly at this chakra’s level.
To balance residual energies and emotions, I recommend utilizing the Reiki self-treatment.
3 – Attention
An excessive desire to be surrounded by people at all times can also signal an imbalance.
It’s great to socialize and see new places. Still, if staying home to unwind becomes a chore and a waste of time, you may have an overabundance of energy stored in your sacral chakra. This can also happen because you’re seeking attention, which often translates into the need to have validation from others.
4 – Shallow
Being overly preoccupied with material things or having reached the point of hedonism are signs of an over-stimulated sacral chakra.
Again, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying some of life’s pleasures. The only issue is when you let these elements take control of your thoughts and even your existence.
Having a serious and honest introspection and finding out why you allowed this to happen is the first step in healing yourself.
