What Is Kundalini Energy And The Relationship With Your True-Self

Kundalini energy is the vital divine essence, with origins in Hinduism, and located at the base of the spine or Root Chakra (Muladhara).

“Know thyself…”

This is an ancient Greek aphorism with diverse deep meanings. Still, why am I mentioning it here, and what has to do with Kundalini energy?

To understand it, let’s start at the very beginning.

What Is Kundalini Energy

Kundalini is a word that comes from the Sanskrit language and it generically translates as “the coiled one”.

In Hindu spiritual practices, it is believed to be Divine energy located at the base of the spine, coiled up and waiting for us to evolve spiritually so it may rise.

Ok, so what does this all mean?

I’m going to describe this based on my experience, as I learned it, and filtered it through my perception over the years.

While I agree that it does have Divine origins, Kundalini represents our own vital energy and information accumulated throughout this life. (as well as through the eons of reincarnations that we have passed through)

Kundalini is often depicted as a serpent, coiled at the base of the spine, at the root chakra.

It is believed that many of us who are unwoken, have the head of the serpent at the second chakra, Swadishtana.

The concept of the serpent has its symbolic connotations.

The process of skin shedding is a reference to how we leave behind the residual and negative aspects of our life, coming out “clean” and refreshed through a series of physical, emotional and spiritual experiences.

Also, it represents a somewhat primitive lifeform that has the spiritual potential of gradually growing from the shape of a serpent to a much higher form of a celestial being.

Of course, this is a process that takes place over many years. Significant changes in one’s understanding and awareness have to take place to even start such a sacred journey.

There are exceptions to the rule but those happen due to more aggressive triggers. I will explain this shortly.

Kundalini Energy And Your True-Self

Connecting the Greek proverb “know thyself”, one the most important things to know about Kundalini is that it represents, in essence, our true self, our true identity which we need to shape to grow.

In psychology, we have the notion of “subconscious”, while in the Hindu philosophy (and not only) this notion is present and integrated into the whole concept of Kundalini.

Please understand that the self, the soul, the mind and the higher-self (spirit) are four different, yet strongly linked notions that live in harmony within the human body (at a physical, emotional, energetic and spiritual level).

Here we are emphasizing the concept of Kundalini – the true-self.

Kundalini has within all the accumulated and integrated positive and negative experiences of a certain person. This means that what some philosophers refer to as “the shadow”, is contained within the Kundalini.

The shadow incorporates all the unfulfilled desires, all the frustration and fears, and all the imbalances we need to work with. We need to replace them with gratitude, wisdom, love, and light.

The concept of balance is present here as well: the shadow is not a bad thing while being excessively meditative all day long is not really a balanced lifestyle.

The shadow exists in order for us to work (not fight) with ourselves and change unnecessary things.

This does not mean leaving aside things you enjoy. It rather states that you need to improve and conquer your weak parts. We all have them.

The 4 Pillars Of Self-Healing And Spiritual Evolution

Forgiveness

Towards yourself first and then others;

If we learn to master this, our lives will change for the better. Of course, it is easier said than done.

Sometimes it is hard to offer forgiveness right away and to some extent, it is understandable. That does not mean you cannot work with yourself and choose to be the wise one.

Offer it, say it, speak of it!

It has a very special and positive vibration that will make you feel blissful at one point.

Understanding

Understand yourself first and then have the power and wisdom to understand others;

You should be aware that everyone is different and even though the world is the same, each one sees it through their spectrum.

This doesn’t mean their perspective cannot be changed, but we are not the ones who have to do that.

We should be there and observe and if we are asked to help, only then we can interfere.

Accepting

This doesn’t mean taking everything for granted or accepting everything others have to say.

Whatever we do, and wherever we go, we meet people with various backgrounds. Some are capable of performing great things, while others are not.

We should not force anyone to change.

I have learned this, the hard way, from a previous relationship. It took a lot of time before we both tried to accept each other for who we really are.

Unfortunately, after becoming aware of the situation, we realized we couldn’t live together.

Staying like that would have meant to change tremendously and make great compromises.

Inevitably these actions would have led to sadness… It is simply better to look at yourself first and think of what truly makes you happy. To this in an honest way before sacrificing your happiness.

Loving

You love your family, your relatives, your friends.

But how are you able to start offering unconditional love to each person you meet?

This is probably one of the hardest things to do.

This doesn’t mean being “in love”… with everyone.

It rather refers to the healthy ideal of offering compassion and understanding to as many people as you can without exclusion.

The feeling of “love” can “feed” your empathy towards them and your emotional side will grow.

You are not giving away.

Instead, you are building the perception of unconditional care and compassion.

“Love means opening your heart, not giving it away!”

from one of my Reiki Masters

If you manage to at least get a glimpse of how these attributes work, your shadow along with your true-self will become more in tune with your soul and your higher-self.

This will make you whole and aware that you are a spiritual entity having a physical experience rather than a physical entity living spiritual experience.

Kundalini Energy And Chakras

The concepts of Kundalini and energy centers (chakras) are strongly related.

Chakras are much more than simple energy centers. They represent stages of healing, understanding, and evolution.

As we learn more about ourselves and our stages of spiritual evolution, we begin to embrace a new level of awareness and consciousness.

The more we get rid of old negative patterns, concepts, and residual energies, Kundalini starts rising through each one of the 7 main chakras.

This means that chakras act as gates and levels of cosmic consciousness.

Whenever we are ready to enter a new level of wisdom, the Kundalini energy will rise and pass through an energy center that corresponds to that particular level.

Ultimately the last one is the crown chakra, also called “thousand petal lotus”.

When Kundalini energy reaches this level and stays there, you make the first and most important step to becoming a true human being (as we were originally designed to be).

This means you begin to see yourself, the events around you and the world from a whole new spectrum. You advance to a vibration where all negative influences turn into light and positive energy, as soon as they reach you.

Almost nothing can affect you.

You are whole and self-sufficient.

You truly realize that you’re part of the Universe and Divinity, as it is part of you.

NOTE: Many believe they have reached this level, but at the first sign of negativity they come in contact with, they lose that balance. Of course, if this happens, one needs to work more to improve.

Earth is a school and we are its pupils. Listen, Learn, Live.

Kundalini Energy In Relationship With Reiki

The energy generated by the Kundalini “serpent” is called Kundalini energy.

This is our vital energy, our inner strength.

In my opinion, there are two major types of energy in this world:

  • Generated energy (this can be either by a human, an animal, a tree, even a planet or a celestial body);
  • The universal energy (which flows through each one of us more or less, according to our spiritual practices and beliefs);

Both of them have the same source, of course.

But one key difference is that when using the universal energy (like you do with Reiki systems) you don’t deplete yourself. You act as a channel through which high vibrational energy flows through.

When using other forms of therapy that involve your own generated energy, you use what you have collected.

Normally, when we talk about a peaceful spiritual evolution, both of these energies have to be in harmony. Our spirit has to receive with joy the universal energy that can nourish our vital one to achieve perfect balance.

They are not separated, they have the same origin.

If you feel disconnected from Reiki but want to bring it back into your life, the Reiki Refresher Course can help you do just that.

Then why is one generated and one channeled?

That’s because Kundalini energy represents the one we can learn to cultivate through our life actions. Our inner strength is determined by the level of understanding and cultivation of the Kundalini energy.

Without it, we would be all in a very meditative, ethereal state of mind and we wouldn’t be able to make sense of this world.

Some might argue that this is the preferred choice because it sounds peaceful.

It might be true but we are left on this amazing planet with our own Kundalini energy for a reason.

One of those reasons is to combine and harmonize the channeled energy with our vital one. That is true mastery.

That is how we are able to understand, reach and be aware of every moment.

Life is all about living the experience and learning from it. If we were born in an aerial frame of mind we would be like muppets looking at the sky.

By practicing different types of meditations, therapies, energy controlling methods, breathing exercises, sports, even reading, we grow our inner energy and knowledge.

One of the best ways of growing your inner energy is Qi Gong, a Chinese practice of coordinated movements for maintaining a healthy mind and body.

I found that the practice and meditations within Qi Gong, together with physical activities, have a very strong effect on cultivating inner energy.

This worked great for me. However, it doesn’t mean there are no other ways of doing this. Start here and feel free to explore.

Kundalini Sexual Energy

Let’s get one thing straight: Sexual energy doesn’t strictly refer to intercourse. It is an incredible force within us, and only a part of Kundalini energy.

The sexual energy is about manifestation and creativity.

Remember that through sexual energy we “create” life. Imagine what power it holds in our lives and the potential it offers us through inspiration and ingenuity.

It is a resource for achieving greatness and an engine that drives life into existence.

It’s normal to gain a sexual appetite. Unfortunately, there are not many people who teach how to properly cultivate and channel it towards creation.

You can learn how to grow your inner energy even through sexual intercourse.

If you’re interested in going deeper, I recommend Mantak Chia’s books:

The rise of the Kundalini energy can be stimulated by certain exercises that involve either abstinence or sexual continence.

I have tried both and I can confirm they are not easy to practice. Once you practice them properly and learn how to use them, they can have amazing results.

I won’t recommend any of these options because each one of us is different and they are not suitable for everyone.

There are many other ways of guiding the Kundalini energy to a clear spiritual ascendance.

Most people are not aware of the various possibilities that lie within us and the endless potential we have.

As a quick conclusion:

By learning how to grow and guide the Kundalini energy, to raise your consciousness, you take the first step in your spiritual evolution.

The Kundalini Awakening Experience

When it comes to the concept of “awakening” the Kundalini energy, there are a variety of experiences people go through, that have different outcomes.

There are cases when the Kundalini energy can suddenly awake and result in unpleasant physical effects. It can even force the person to seek medical advice.

These are extreme situations that can be avoided. You just have to be aware of them.

Here are just a few instances when Kundalini energy can rise:

Unconsciously And Neutral

As the title suggests, this is a more neutral and slow way of awakening the Kundalini energy.

In this case, a person might have spent little or no time with energy healing. At a certain point though, due to some changes, it simply started rising.

This can stop at a specific level or by being aware of the situation, she can work with the energy for her greater good and start manifesting a new level of vibration.

Consciously And Active

Here the person has intentionally spent quite a bit of time with spiritual practices. These can vary from different types of meditation, yoga, Reiki, Theta Healing, NLP or other forms of therapy.

There is a strong possibility that the Kundalini energy will slowly rise in time to an optimum level, raising the awareness and consciousness of the respective person.

It is recommended to have a guided process so that any transition will happen in a harmonious way.

Unconsciously And Sudden

This is the rarest and most extreme situation. Here the person may wake and start to feel like burning up, nervous or confused.

It can happen after an accident or a violent event. Again, it’s a rare case.

It’s best to have someone next to you for advice. Someone to guide and teach you what you should do with this crazy amount of energy that has just awaken.

If there is nobody who can help, I would suggest doing some yoga, sports or any sort of physical activity.

This will disperse part of the excess energy. Of course, it’s a temporary solution and it’s not able to create a permanent balance. It is recommended to attend courses or seminars dedicated to this kind of event.

I have seen such a case at one of the seminars I attended. It was someone who after more than 10 years of being happily married, woke up next to her husband and she could not understand what she was doing there next to that person.

She left the next day, without being able to explain much and ended up traveling and living life on her terms.

Again, this is a very extreme and rare case. But there are confusing situations like these when one doesn’t know what to believe.

Awoken Since Birth Or At A Young Age

This is present at most of the children born in recent years (after 2000).

They find it easy to manifest themselves and their desires without being too needy.

Some of them even have certain abilities that surpass known human logic.

These children should be properly guided, and their potential cultivated for a harmonious evolution on an emotional and spiritual level.

The situations above are neither good nor bad.

It is said that each one receives what is best for her and not what she wants. According to where you are in life, you receive what is good for you at that particular time. Of course, there are ways to optimize it and to aid the transition.

Remember to “stay” (just) with yourself from time to time. You’ll be amazed by the positive effects this “therapy” will have on you.

What Happens After Kundalini Awakening

You’ll get the best answer after experiencing it.

Honestly, on an energetic level, I have reached a point when I learned how to rise the Kundalini energy above the 7th chakra.

Note: The situation I just used as an example is not a full awakening, but rather an exercise. It is best done when you are at peace and cleansed before starting. This exercise will help you free and cleanse the path for the energy to rise and flow. It will bring you to a place of serenity and awareness but remember that it is not a permanent awakening.

It can be done. That’s not a challenge. What’s difficult is to keep it there.

The hardest part of every spiritual practice or meditation is staying for a prolonged period of time in that state.

Normally, after Kundalini energy has risen a state and calmness follows, with a degree of realization that your inner self is one with your higher-self and that your physical body is one with the energetic one.

From here it is up to the practitioner to keep this awareness and live through it.

Kundalini Blockage Symptoms

There are a few symptoms that suggest the Kundalini energy has a desire to rise, but for some reason, due to certain blockages, it is unable to do so.

Lower Back Pain

Apart from the obvious forms of injuries, sudden lower back pain can indicate either the disharmony of a person with the environment she was once comfortable with or the desire of the vital energy to rise for the greater good of the person.

Inability To Harmonize With The World Around You

This is usually found in people who have a spiritual predisposition from a very young age.

They have, within them the potential to adapt. This needs to be guided and cultivated. At that point, they will have the power to do the same.

Feeling Inside Pressure And Being Anxious

When this feeling suddenly appears, it could be a sign of trapped Kundalini energy. People with these symptoms should always be approached with patience, calm and tolerance.

Sports, yoga or physical activities are the optimum solution for this situation. While this helps with excessive amounts of energy, it’s just a quick fix.

Proper spiritual guidance needs to be present together with patience and understanding. Keeping physical activities together with spiritual guidance can be extremely helpful.

A Meditation To Help You Raise Your Kundalini Energy

Here’s an exercise that helped me quite a lot in my years of development. Bear in mind to avoid distractions, have a quiet place and at least a free hour on your hand.

This meditation will help clear your energy centers and your main energy channels while placing you in a meditative state. By following the indications within this meditation, you will start going through a passive-dynamic feeling. This can be followed by tingling hyper-energized reactions.

Try to free your mind and follow the steps in the video. I recommend closing any distractions, find a comfortable chair, sit straight and close your eyes.

There are many guided meditations out there but I found this to be very useful to me.

Just too new to Reiki beginners course, I tries the above meditation last night and fall short of words to describe the experience. I wanted to know if this meditation can be done in night and what more can i do to uplift my frequency. I am trying to break the emotional loop.

    • Hi Meenal.
Indeed, the meditation does have strong effects. I don’t recommend you use it before going to sleep as it’s meant to stimulate the rising of the Kundalini energy.

Having said that, if you are looking to uplift your vibration, then keep practicing the self-treatment, also fasting alongside prayers or mantras helps. Use all this in combination with the presented meditation and you will notice changes within your mental and emotional layers. Then take a break and allow the healing energy to settle. Take a step back and reflect upon yourself and your connection to the world around you. As a side note, you don’t need to do this meditation every time you are practicing the self-treatment. Once per week or two weeks would be enough to start with. Later on, you may use it more often.

      Blessings!
