Sahasrara Chakra or the Crown Chakra is the 7th and last primary energy center located on the human body. Its position is on the top of the head and represents the center of pure Divine consciousness. This is the energy center for wisdom and enlightenment.
Other Names And The Meaning Of Sahasrara Chakra
Like all the other chakras, its name has origins in the Sanskrit language and is generally translates as “thousand-petaled”. Therefore Sahasrara is also known as the “thousand petal lotus chakra”.
But other names are quite common. Here are some of them:
This is one of the most common names due to its location on the vertex (the upper surface of the head) and its connection with the pure consciousness.
Thousand Petal Lotus/Flower / 1000 Petal Lotus
A white and purple lotus flower with one thousand petals is usually how Sahasrara is represented. The symbolic number of petals represent the phases of consciousness a person can pass through at this level to achieve enlightenment.
Divine Consciousness Chakra
This describes the ability of Sahasrara to channel pure and high vibrational information and energy. This results in a healthy connection to the Divine consciousness, leading the person to an advanced spiritual evolution.
Higher Self Chakra
Because of its incredible potential and power, Sahasrara is often called the higher self chakra. It represents the next and last important spiritual threshold that a person needs to reach in order to obtain a healthy and harmonious spiritual growth.
From this point on the inner-self is united with the higher self, forming a perfect and harmonious unity. This leads to a smooth transcend towards a spiritual evolution.
The True-Self, The Soul And The Higher-Self
Through my studies and at seminars, I have seen several debates on whether there are more superior energy centers than Sahasrara or not.
The correct answer is yes, there are.
More exactly, above Sahasrara, there are at least three known energy centers that facilitate our connection to the Divine Self. The first one, and probably the most interesting of all, would be The Soul Star Chakra.
As many of my colleagues and students wonder – if there is the Kundalini, the soul and the higher self – doesn’t this mean there are three separate forms of energy?
And how can we speak of unity when there are already so many (apparently different) aspects of one’s self?
Here’s An Example
Think of a guitar.
Now, visualize how each of its strings has a different tune.
They are connected and can be tuned with special keys. Together, if used correctly, those strings can play beautiful music. For this to happen, the guitar needs to be correctly tuned and balanced.
The instrument, its strings, and together with the person playing it, become one. It cannot play music separately without all the components connected.
It’s a system that can only work together.
We function the same way.
The strings are the energy centers, the sounds that the strings produce are each one’s vibration and the songs are manifestations of our true selves.
The person playing the guitar is our true inner-self, which manifests different levels of spirituality once it is trained and disciplined.
All the above, the true-self, the soul, and the higher-self, belong within each of us.
They become one.
Just as the music improves with time, through the correct manifestation we transcend certain levels of spirituality which eventually leads to evolution.
Therefore, another mystery is born.
What Happens When Kundalini Reaches Sahasrara
Kundalini is our own energy and has the shape of a “serpent”.
When it reaches the crown chakra and stays there it means that it has engulfed, healed and transcended all the imbalances up to this level. This represents a unity between Kundalini, the soul and the higher self.
From this point on, the only way to go is “up”. This means that it will enable a Divine level of consciousness to manifest throughout all activities of life.
At this level, the Kundalini energy will spread like a waterfall of light and love towards everyone and everything around you.
Here there are no attachments, worries or sufferings present. This is a very important step in discovering what it actually means to be a human. The “serpent” transforms into a higher vibrational spiritual entity.
Each one of us is destined to reach this level through knowledge and training. Originally we were not made to serve only the material world, but to become the perfect link between the physical and the spiritual planes.
This is what happens when Kundalini reaches Sahasrara, the imperial seat of wisdom and Divine consciousness.
Where Is The Crown Chakra Located And What Are The Main Powers Of Sahasrara
The crown chakra is located on top of your head, having the base and center, right on the vertex part of the skull.
It doesn’t have any projection as it is self-sufficient.
Through the crown chakra flows the vibration of pure consciousness, light, and wisdom.
Sahasrara is the coordinator of all the other chakras and generates the energy field of informational contact with the Universe.
The crown chakra is your main conductor of universal energy and the main connector with its source (Divinity).
From A Physical Perspective
The crown chakra is strongly connected to the pineal gland. This little gland is responsible for the production of melatonin (a hormone that helps with sleep patterns).
Together with Ajna, Sahasrara coordinates the brain and its functions, physical balance, and concentration.
Feelings such as harmony, serenity, and comfort are generated at this level and later become connected to other chakras, according to each one’s vibration.
By being the main conductor of Divine information and energy, the crown chakra becomes the main “engine” of awareness.
The Emotional And Energetic Level
Sahasrara is the energy center of pure intuition and consciousness. It has a stronger connection to wisdom rather than knowledge.
Through Sahasrara, we are able to access the true, spiritual concept of wisdom and not the superficial one presented by other people.
It is said that “patience is a virtue” and I totally agree with that.
But few of us know that true, detached and balanced patience originates from Sahasrara.
If you have ever had an “OBE” (out of body experience), or channeling, this was possible only through a healthy crown chakra. I do not encourage OBE as a practice because it needs proper guidance and a teacher. What’s important to remember is that in order for this to work, you have to have a perfectly working crown chakra.
Sahasrara is the place from where the inspiration is channeled. It is also the energy center through which the universal energy flows and manifests itself, therefore it has a crucial role in our connection to Divinity.
Why Is Sahasrara Chakra In A State Of Imbalance
There are several reasons for Sahasrara to be imbalanced.
One main reason is the poor understanding of our connection with Divinity and the people around us.
Divinity manifests through people, regardless of what we believe or not. And I’m not talking about religion. That’s a personal choice and everyone is free to choose whatever path they like.
Failing to understand that there is a primordial source of energy and love while also failing to establish a proper connection with it, will create imbalances for the crown chakra.
In the end, it is up to each one of us to choose what we believe in and how we perceive it.
The feeling of being abandoned and lost are symptoms of an unbalanced crown chakra. This can lead to a lack of trust in life, depression and an inability to understand the events that are unfolding in your life.
In return, these negative emotions can harm even more the crown chakra, leading to blockages at this level.
The feeling of being empty of faith in yourself, people and Divinity can also lead to the energetic deterioration of Sahasrara chakra.
Even the “simple” unwillingness and stubbornness to accept the existence of a connection to the universal source of life force energy can severely affect the crown chakra energy field.
Remember that not knowing and refusing to understand are two different things.
What Is The Element And Symbol For The Crown Chakra
The main element for Sahasrara is pure light. It is sometimes perceived as a golden white light with shades of purple.
Similar to the spiritual concept of a rainbow, the purple and white colors found in Sahasrara represent the top, high vibrational chromatic pattern.
As the crown chakra is the coordinator for all the rest of the chakras.
White is the pure glow from which all the other colors are born.
The symbol of the crown chakra, which is a thousand petal lotus flower, represents the bloom of the higher self in connection with Divine consciousness.
The Symptoms You May Experience When Sahasrara Opens
- Having a healthy and strong intuition is a very clear sign of good working crown chakra.
- The ability to channel the right information and universal energy is also a symptom of the open crown chakra.
- My personal take on this, and one of the symptoms that I consider to be important, is feeling good about yourself and the world around.
- By being open to the physical and the spiritual world you become a channel through which the light manifests here, on Earth.
- Understanding what is right and wrong without judging is a very good sign of wisdom and balanced crown chakra.
- The ability to practice certain forms of energetic and spiritual therapies enhances and stimulates the health of Sahasrara.
- People who can write, draw or talk openly about the physical and spiritual world show a sign of a properly working crown chakra.
- The interest towards philosophy, theology, astronomy or even astrology, usually maintains the crown chakra healthy.
How To Activate And Cleanse Your Crown Chakra
Any type of meditation that facilitates the flow of energy throughout the body will stimulate the crown chakra.
Praying and inhaling the energy from nature will facilitate a better flow of energy through Sahasrara.
As a practitioner and teacher, I do have to mention that Reiki is extremely beneficial for the crown chakra. The main component of any Reiki attunement is to open the crown chakra, through which the universal life force energy flows.
Even closing your eyes and just listening to calming and meditative music can stimulate it.
A simple visualization within a meditation of a white beam of light flowing through the crown of your head is sometimes enough to stimulate the growth of Sahasrara.
The crown chakra resonates (as Ajna) with the beej mantra OM or AUM, which is a very beneficial tone for the energy field it generates.
There is also the known mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” which cleanses all the energy fields of your body, especially the one generated by Sahasrara.
Crown Chakra Crystals, Stones, And Oils
The main stones/crystals that the crown chakra resonates with are clear white quartz, amethyst, opaline, and white jade.
For aromatherapy, I would recommend the ones that offer a feeling of “peace of mind”.
Some of them are frankincense, olibanum, lavender, ylang-ylang, jasmine, sandalwood, elemi, neroli, and patchouli. Chandan or Darshan incense sticks are also recommended.
Of course, it all depends on the fragrance tolerance of each person.
If you don’t tolerate these incense, you can always use a simple white candle.
